This is the second book in the "What Zombies Fear" series. Victor Tookes and his family are still struggling to survive after a parasite that turns people into zombies wipes out civilization. After reaching the relative safety of the family home in Virginia, the danger only intensifies. Zombies still stalk their every move but now Victor and his friends have another threat to deal with - a rogue military unit whose commander wants Victor's son.

When Max is kidnapped, Victor goes on the warpath, moving mountains and destroying everything that stands between him and his son. Victor, John, Leo, and Marshall discover Max is being held a few miles from their home. The rescue attempt and the small child’s attempt to escape result in the rise of a new cult, The Maxists.

The second book in the series and a even a bit better than the first one. There are a few editing issues, not terrible but noticeable. At times you can feel the author's writing inexperience, not sure if that is the right way to put it and I hate to criticize since I have certainly never written and published a book myself, but the dialog at times just doesn't seem real. The child in the story Max is portrayed just to perfect as a child. He's 3 years old and is loving and just perfect in behavior, goes to bed and brushes his teeth when dad says so etc... I think any parent will agree that their little angels are not angels at all times. I don't mean to nitpick this issue, but this kid is like just perfect throughout the complete apocalypse, not one meltdown at all, I can't get my kids out of bed in the morning for school without some issue or other. Anyways, these few things are easily overlooked, it's a great story and has an original hook, there are the usual slow moving zombies and some super zombies with varying degrees of super powers like telepathy, super speed, super strength, teleportation and flying, yeah imagine that. Getting bit by a zombie gets you infected with the alien parasites and if you are not immune you become one of the zombies, if you're immune you get some really cool powers so it basically becomes zombies vs human survivors and super zombies vs. super humans. Some of the best parts are small groups of normal humans and super humans taking on zombie hordes numbering in the thousands. Humans with super strength tossing cars and crushing zombies while super zombies come wading in to battle and humans with super speed slicing and dicing zombies on the run, all quite entertaining. The first book and this one moves along well and both were good reads, I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

What Zombies Fear 2 The Maxists eBook Kirk Allmond Reviews

I got a free preview of the first book of this series,(I'd start with that one first or you might be a bit lost). Most books that start off as free don't hook me into to the second(or third..),this series did it for me .I am so hooked .Its not a normal zombie story, there are some twists and its has a lot of storylines to follow but thats a plus for me.The main guy Victor has his faults ,he makes mistakes,he is human and it comes out as so true for me.He did not want to be a leader ,he only wanted to save his family. His son(Max) is a child and has more insight into the zombies and what they are about. This is one is a bit about that but it turns into much more than that. Its not a one shot book, after this one you have to read the others ,but you will want to,you really care about what happens to them all and you will have your fav guy(or gal)to cheer for but for the price you can't beat it.get them all.
[true story]
I smoke Swisher Sweet little cigars. I normally would smoke a half every 1-2 hours. I could make a pack last nearly a week at times. BUT, ever since I started reading "What Zombies Fear", I find myself smoking an entire cigar. Because I am so captivated by the story, I just plain forget to stop and put the cigar out.

I would like to thank the author (Kirk Allmond) very much for helping me burn through cigars faster. By my calculation, he now owes me about a carton and a half of Swisher Sweet little cigars. I'll even pay for shipping... LOL!!

PS I'm joking of course about owing me cigars, I'm just expressing how much I am TRULY enjoying the "What Zombies Fear" series.

On another note, I have Prime and could have chosen to download this book to my for free. I believe the series is very deserving of purchase, so much so, that I opted to pay the very reasonable $2.99 instead. Need to support the author so that they can keep entertaining us!!
Having read the first amazing book in this series & loving it, I naturally had to move on to book two. It does not disappoint!! The Maxists is the continuing saga of Victor Tookes, his son, Max, & the community they have managed to build in the ashes of the zombie apocalypse. With some of them being immune to a zombie bite & developing special abilities, Victor is realizing that Max is more special than they knew. They also realize that there is more out there than zombies to fear. A rogue military faction has made it's presence known, and they want Max. We also find another community of survivors, who think Max is the savior, & will stop at nothing to protect him, even from his own father. The Maxists continues to suck you in to Tookes world, and you will never see things the same again. A must have for any zombie fan!!
I read this book in 2 days and thoroughly enjoyed it. It continues right where the first book ended, and sets a good action packed pace. Some of the uncertainties left open in the first book are answered and we do have a better understanding of what is happening to the world. I really like the twist on zombies in this series, and the changes inflicted on some of the humans as well. It's fun and original.

The typos were a little rougher than the first book. One of the supers, Trina, I believe, changes names back and forth several times on the same page, which is a bit confusing and takes the reader out of the story. Some of the character's relationships do not have a lot of written support and are somewhat weak and undeveloped. Max's relationships with Steve and Jason are far more developed than the one between Victor and Leo. During one of the action scenes on the farm, many of the unknown characters are given names during their one line appearance, making that section confusing, and hard to follow. Leo's power is given definition by a super, but there is no written support for this, or reaction from the group. Did she not realize she could do this (trying not to spoil) vs just move fast? Is this where she discovers this heightened ability or was she already becoming aware?

I do feel the overall writing ability was much improved from the first book. The words spoken by the characters were more realistic, and the transitions were smoother. The story progressed at a good pace and was very entertaining. I enjoyed this quick action packed read. When I finished it last night, I downloaded and started the third book, eager to see what happens next.
